ha ha ha!!! I'm the opposite of you: I like the actual garage sale, NOT the set up or break down/haul away. Emma and I would make a good team! :)

I agree with much of what you say here, John, and much of it needs to amplified many times. For my part I think "begins at home" starts with actually having a clue about many of the issues. I see absolutely no comparison between Katrina and the current oil spill disaster, by the way. Only about 1% of the voters in our country can name the nine Supreme Court justices. And virtually all the Tea Party rallies are about being against something with virtually no solutions beyond some notions amounting to a Founding Fathers' Theme Park. In the end our country is very much self absorbed from the big shots on Wall Street getting bonuses in spite of incredible failures to the local businessman making passes at most of the women in the office.

I felt your pain at the time your mother was going through the cancer story. Charles' grandmother died of Hodgkins before it was curable. Then his mother died of breast cancer at 66 and his sister at 59. His dad died of cancer at 86 and my Mother at 91. So we are very familiar with the disease. My grandfather lived with us after he had a face cancer cut out of his cheek, leaving a big hole where, as a kid, I watched his tongue move, the chewing tobacco run out and the whiskers grow until someone shaved them off. It was quite a task for him to eat all his food on the other side and try to keep that from running out. He died from cancer two weeks after he requested to go to a home in Salina. These are the memories your touching story brought back for me. Not pleasant, but part of life.

Well and accurately said, John.
I have the great pleasure once a year to have lunch with many of my old high school sports team mates and the several coaches who coached us in our various sports. Our coaches had a crucial role in determining what we value, how we think, and what we do. We team mates shared experiences that shaped us and are with us today. The best part of our annual "lunch with the coaches" is that we get to say Thank You to these great(but not rich or famous) men each year.
